How to Propose at Washington Oaks Gardens State Park

First of all—AMAZING choice!!

Washington Oaks is easily one of my favorite proposal locations near Palm Coast because you get so much variety in one place. On one side of A1A, you have beautiful formal gardens filled with winding pathways, flowers, reflection ponds, and huge oak trees. Then, just across the road, you have the Atlantic Ocean and those iconic coquina rocks that make this stretch of coastline look completely different from your typical Florida beach!

Whether you're imagining something romantic and private in the gardens or you'd rather pop the question by the ocean and celebrate on the rocks afterward, there are so many ways to make a Washington Oaks proposal feel like you two.

And if the thought of secretly coordinating a photographer, getting your partner to the exact right spot, AND somehow acting normal beforehand has you slightly panicking... don't worry!

That's what this guide is for!

Why Propose at Washington Oaks Gardens State Park?

Honestly? The variety!

You don't have to choose between a romantic garden proposal and beach engagement photos afterward, you can have both!

You could propose beneath the oak trees, spend some time exploring the gardens together, and then head across to the beach for photos along the coquina rocks. Or you can completely flip it and make the rocky coastline the setting for the big moment itself!

It also works beautifully if you're trying to make the proposal feel like a normal date. A casual "Let's go walk around Washington Oaks" is a lot less suspicious than "Please dress nicely and meet me at this very specific location at exactly 5:47 PM."

Best Places to Propose at Washington Oaks Gardens State Park

There isn't one single "proposal spot" at Washington Oaks, which I actually love. We can choose an area based on the atmosphere you're looking for, how private you'd like the moment to feel, and where you'd like to take photos afterward.

The Formal Gardens

If you're picturing something romantic, colorful, and a little more elegant, I'd choose the gardens.

There are so many beautiful little corners tucked throughout them, which gives us options depending on what's blooming, how busy the park is that day, and where the light looks best.

This is also one of the easiest places to make the proposal feel natural. You can simply suggest walking through the gardens together while I'm already nearby pretending I'm definitely not waiting for you to propose. 

Then, once you're in the spot we've planned ahead of time...

You pop the question.

She says YES.

You both freak out.

And I finally get to stop hiding.

Beneath the Oak Trees

If flowers aren't really your thing and you'd rather have something that feels a little more natural, Washington Oaks has some gorgeous oak-covered areas.

The huge trees and Spanish moss give everything that dreamy Old Florida feeling, and I especially love this option for couples who want something simple and intimate.

It also photographs beautifully during that warm late-afternoon light!

In Front of the Gazebo & Reflection Pond

If you're looking for a proposal spot that feels romantic and a little more classic, the area in front of the gazebo and reflection pond is such a beautiful option!

With the gazebo, water, and greenery all around you, there's already a gorgeous backdrop built right in—no elaborate setup needed! I especially love this spot if you want the moment to feel a little more intentional while still keeping everything simple and natural.

After they say YES, we can explore the surrounding garden paths and then make our way to the coquina rock beach for a completely different look in your engagement photos.

The Coquina Rock Beach

Want something a little more dramatic?

Head across A1A to the beach.

Washington Oaks is famous for the coquina rock formations along its Atlantic shoreline, and they're one of the things that make this location so special.

Instead of a typical sandy Florida beach proposal, you'll have waves crashing against the rocks and tons of texture in the background.

It's romantic, adventurous, and just a little different—which I LOVE.

One thing to keep in mind is that the rocks can be uneven and slippery depending on conditions, so I wouldn't plan on sprinting across them with a ring box in your pocket! I'll choose the exact spot beforehand so you know exactly where you're going.

Gardens or Beach: Which Should You Choose?

My personal favorite?

I'd probably propose in the gardens and then head over to the coquina rocks afterward.

That way, you get the peaceful, romantic setting for the actual proposal AND a completely different backdrop for your newly-engaged photos.

Two looks. One location. No 30-minute drive between them.

What's the Best Time of Day for a Washington Oaks Proposal?

Because Washington Oaks currently opens at 8:00 AM and closes at sunset, a true sunrise proposal isn't an option during normal park hours.

But you still have two really great choices.

Shortly After the Park Opens

If you're both morning people—or you can somehow convince your partner that an 8 a.m. garden stroll sounds completely normal—early morning can be beautiful!

Temperatures are generally more comfortable, especially during Florida's warmer months, and starting shortly after opening gives you plenty of time to explore afterward.

Late Afternoon + Sunset

This would be my pick.

I love starting in the gardens during the last couple of hours before sunset, when the light begins getting warmer and softer.

After the proposal, we can take our time exploring the gardens before heading across to the beach for your final photos of the evening.

And because the park closes at sunset, we'll plan the timing carefully so we're not trying to squeeze everything into the last ten minutes.

How Does a Surprise Proposal With a Photographer Actually Work?

This is usually the part people are most nervous about.

"Okay... but how do you photograph it without them seeing you?!"

Don't worry, we plan ALL of this beforehand.

Before your proposal, we'll figure out:

• The exact location

• What time you should arrive

• Where you'll walk in from

• Where I'll be positioned

• Which direction you should face

• The exact spot where you'll propose

• How we'll communicate that day

• A backup plan if something unexpected happens

I'll get there before you and get into position.

You'll arrive with your partner and follow the plan we've already created together.

And then...

YOU DO THE THING!

I'll photograph the entire moment from a distance—the nerves, the realization, the reaction, the hugs, the happy tears, all of it.

Then I'll give you a minute to actually enjoy what just happened before coming over and officially saying hi!

What Happens After They Say Yes?

THIS is one of my favorite parts.

You're engaged!!!

Instead of immediately packing everything up and going home, we'll turn the rest of your photography time into a mini engagement session.

And Washington Oaks is PERFECT for this.

We'll wander through the gardens, explore the pathways beneath the oak trees, and capture all those "Wait... we're actually engaged?!" moments while everything is still fresh.

Then, depending on your package and timing, we can head over to the beach and finish with portraits around the coquina rocks.

These are usually some of my favorite photos because there's nothing forced about the excitement.

You literally just got engaged!

Of course you're smiling like crazy.

Let's say sunset is at 7:00 PM.

Here's what your evening could look like:

5:00 PM — I arrive

I'll scout everything, make sure our planned location looks good, check the lighting, and get into position.

5:20 PM — You arrive together

You casually suggest walking through the gardens like this isn't the most nerve-racking walk of your entire

life.

5:30 PM — THE PROPOSAL

You make your way to our planned spot and ask the question!

5:35 PM — Soak It In

Hug. Cry. Stare at the ring approximately 47 times.

I'll capture it all while giving you a little space to enjoy the moment.

5:40 PM — Engagement Photos in the Gardens

We'll explore some of my favorite spots throughout Washington Oaks while the evening light gets softer.

6:00 PM — Head to the Beach

We'll make our way across to the Atlantic side for a completely different look.

6:15 PM — Coquina Rock Photos

Time to explore the rocks, walk along the shoreline, and soak in those last few minutes of being newly engaged.

6:45 PM — Sunset + Wrap Up

Now you're off to celebrate!!

Can I Bring Flowers or Set Up Decorations?

If you're envisioning flowers, a picnic, candles, signs, champagne, or another setup, please check with the park before making plans.

Florida State Parks protects its natural and historic resources, and photography or activities that affect normal park operations or resources can require additional approval.

Keep it simple here!

A bouquet of flowers waiting afterward can be adorable, but Washington Oaks is already so beautiful that you really don't need to bring much!

Do You Need a Photography Permit?

Permit requirements can vary depending on your proposal plans, especially if you're bringing decorations, reserving an area, or planning a larger setup. I always recommend checking directly with Washington Oaks Gardens State Park before finalizing your plans so we know exactly what's allowed!

Can We Bring Our Dog?

If your dog is part of your love story, I completely understand wanting them there!

But Washington Oaks has some important restrictions.

Pets must be well-behaved and kept on a 6-foot leash, and they aren't allowed in the formal gardens or on the beach. Pets are permitted in the picnic area and along the park's hiking and biking trails. Service animals are allowed throughout the park.

So if having your pup actually present for the proposal is non-negotiable, Washington Oaks' most iconic photo areas probably aren't going to be the best fit.

What If It Rains?

Ahhh, Florida.

Rain can pop up seemingly out of nowhere, especially during the summer.

We'll keep an eye on the forecast as your proposal gets closer and adjust our plan if we need to.

But if it's just a little rain?

We can embrace it!

I photograph in the rain and I bring a clear umbrella for my couples so we can still create beautiful photos without letting a little Florida weather ruin the excitement.

And honestly, rainy photos can be SO romantic!

If we're dealing with severe weather or unsafe conditions, that's a different story. Safety always comes first, and we'll figure out the best backup plan together!

What Should You Tell Your Partner?

This is where you have to get creative.

You need a reason to:

A) Go to Washington Oaks.

B) Arrive at a very specific time.

C) Look somewhat photo-ready.

...without making them immediately think, Oh my gosh, they're proposing.

Some believable ideas:

• Plan a date night and suggest walking through the gardens before dinner.

• Say you heard Washington Oaks is beautiful and want to check it out.

• Have a friend or family member suggest going.

• Plan another activity nearby and make Washington Oaks the "spontaneous" stop beforehand.

• If you're visiting from out of town, add it to your sightseeing plans.

And please...

Don't suddenly tell someone who normally lives in leggings that they need to wear a nice dress to your random Tuesday walk through a state park! 😆

Know your partner. Keep the story believable!

Tips for Planning the Perfect Washington Oaks Proposal

My biggest piece of advice?

Don't overcomplicate it!

Your partner isn't going to remember whether every flower was positioned perfectly or whether you stood precisely six inches to the left of where we planned.

They're going to remember looking at you and realizing:

Oh my gosh. This is happening.

We'll take care of the logistics beforehand so that when the moment actually arrives, your only job is to be present.

Take your time.

Say what you want to say.

Get down on one knee.

And wait until they react before standing back up!
