How to Plan the Perfect Night of Lights Proposal in St. Augustine, FL (From a St. Augustine Proposal Photographer)

If you’re dreaming of a magical, glowing, absolutely unforgettable proposal… you honestly can’t pick a better place than St. Augustine during Night of Lights. As a St. Augustine Proposal Photographer who spends a lot of time photographing couples around the city, I can confidently say there’s nothing quite like those millions of twinkling lights reflecting off the water, the cobblestone streets, and the warm holiday buzz in the air. It’s romantic. It’s cozy. It feels like your own little world — even if the city is full of people.

Whether you’re traveling here to pop the question or you’re a local who wants to make this moment feel extra special, here’s how to plan an incredible Night of Lights proposal (plus some photographer-approved tips!).

1. Choose the Perfect Proposal Spot

There are so many beautiful locations during Night of Lights, but here are a few of my favorites that always photograph so well:

  • The Lightner Museum Courtyard (a hidden gem!)

A couple embraces and almost kisses in front of a lit-up building at night. Warm mood, festive lights create a romantic background.

If you want gorgeous architecture, soft glowing lights, and fewer people in the background, this is the spot. It’s quieter than the main plaza, and the way the lights bounce around the courtyard makes every proposal look dreamy. It’s one of my go-to locations for couples who want something intimate but still right in the heart of downtown.

  • The Bayfront + Bridge of Lions

If you’re dreaming of sweeping views and sparkling reflections on the water, the Bayfront is iconic — especially when the boats are lit up. Just know that the crowds are real here on weekends, so timing is everything.

  • The Plaza de la Constitución

This is the classic Night of Lights photo backdrop — the giant oak trees wrapped in white lights and the historic buildings glowing behind you. It’s beautiful, but definitely busy. If you want this location, I’ll help you plan the perfect moment so we still get that magical feel without interruptions.

2. Plan for a Weekday if Possible

This is the best insider tip I can give you:

Weekdays are way less crowded!

St. Augustine gets packed on Fridays–Sundays during Night of Lights, which can make it harder to find a quiet moment. If you can propose Monday–Thursday, you’ll have so much more space, more privacy, and better photo opportunities! It truly makes all the difference.

3. Pick the Perfect Time of Day

Golden Hour → Sunset

You get a mix of warm sunlight and the twinkly lights just starting to glow. It’s unbelievably gorgeous.

Blue Hour → Just After Sunset

This is my favorite for proposals — the sky turns deep blue, the lights sparkle brighter, and the photos look magical.

Nighttime → For Full Sparkle

If you’re dreaming of pure holiday lights everywhere, night is the vibe. It feels cozy and cinematic.

I help all my proposal clients choose the perfect timing based on the crowd levels, location, and the look they want!

4. Book Your St Augustine Proposal Photographer Early

Night of Lights is one of the busiest times of the year — for tourism and photography. If you’re planning to propose November through January, it’s best to secure your St Augustine Proposal Photographer and pick a date ASAP so everything runs smoothly!

I photograph proposals all around St. Augustine, including the Lightner Museum, Downtown, the Bayfront, the beaches, and more. I help with planning, location scouting, timing, and making sure everything stays stress-free and fun!

5. Add a Personal Touch

A few ideas I’ve seen couples incorporate that feel meaningful without being complicated:

  • A short note or letter to read just before proposing

  • A favorite holiday song playing on your phone

  • A small picnic setup nearby for after the proposal

  • Bringing your dog (yes please!)

We can absolutely brainstorm ideas together if you want to make it feel extra special and unique to your relationship!
