What an Elopement Day Actually Feels Like (From a Photographer’s Perspective)

Bride and groom elopement in St. Augustine. Florida courthouse elopement.

When most people think about eloping, they usually picture the ceremony itself.

The vows. The dress. The photos.

But what people don’t always realize is… your elopement day feels so much bigger than just one moment!

And honestly? That’s one of my favorite parts about photographing elopements!

As a photographer, I get to witness what these days actually feel like behind the scenes: the quiet moments, the happy chaos, the deep breaths before vows, the spontaneous adventures, and the moments couples never expect to love as much as they do.

And spoiler alert: it usually feels a lot less rushed and a lot more intentional than a traditional wedding day!

The Morning Feels Calm and Exciting

One of the biggest things couples tell me after their elopement is how surprised they were by how calm the morning felt.

Yes, there are definitely nerves. And there’s usually that “wait… we’re actually getting married today”  kind of excitement too!

But unlike a traditional wedding morning that can sometimes feel rushed or overwhelming, elopement mornings often leave space to slow down and actually be present.

Maybe you’re:

  • Making coffee together in your Airbnb

  • Watching the sunrise on the beach

  • Writing private vows

  • Getting ready with ocean views nearby

  • Taking your dog on a morning walk

  • Listening to your favorite music while getting ready

There’s no huge crowd pulling you in different directions. No packed schedule before the day has even started.

Just space to breathe, soak it all in, and feel excited about what’s ahead.

And honestly? Those slower moments often end up being some of my favorite memories to capture because they feel so real and personal!

The Nerves Hit Right Before the Ceremony/First Look

Even couples who are super laid-back still get nervous right before seeing each other or reading vows.

And it’s honestly really sweet!

There’s usually:

  • Excited pacing

  • Deep breaths

  • Happy tears

  • “Oh my gosh, this is really happening” moments

Then suddenly…

You see each other!!

And everything else fades away.

Your Ceremony Feels Intentional

This is where elopements feel so different. There’s no pressure to perform for a crowd. No huge timeline breathing down your neck. No rushing through your vows.

It often feels:

  • Quiet

  • Emotional

  • Intimate

  • Deeply personal

Sometimes couples laugh through their vows.

Sometimes they cry.

Sometimes both.

And every version feels beautiful because it feels real!

The Day Becomes an Adventure

This is where things get really fun!

After the ceremony, the day can become whatever you want it to be.

I’ve seen couples:

  • Pop champagne on the beach

  • Ride scooters through town

  • Go horseback riding

  • Get some ice cream

  • Have a picnic

  • Eat pizza after saying their vows

  • Explore downtown St. Augustine

  • Watch the sunset on a sailboat

  • Hike in national parks

And these moments often become the stories couples talk about forever!

The Little In-Between Moments Matter Most

This might be my favorite part of all!

The moments couples never plan for:

  • Fixing each other’s hair in the wind

  • Laughing after tripping in the sand

  • Holding hands while walking somewhere new

  • Sitting quietly after the ceremony realizing you just got married

These moments feel incredibly real.

And they’re often the ones that hit the hardest when couples look back at their photos!

It Feels Like Your Day

This is probably the biggest difference.

Your elopement day doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.

It can be:

  • Adventurous

  • Relaxed

  • Romantic

  • Wild

  • Simple

  • Completely unique

There are no rules.

And that freedom? That’s what makes elopements so special!

What Couples Usually Say Afterward

I hear things like:

“That felt so us.”
“That was way less stressful than we expected.”
“I wouldn’t change a thing.”

And honestly? That says everything!
