What If It Rains on Your Proposal? (Backup Plan Guide)

If you’re planning a surprise proposal, there’s a good chance you’ve already thought about one thing:
“What if it rains?”

And honestly? That’s completely valid, especially here in Florida where the weather can change fast.
But here’s the good news:
Rain does not have to ruin your proposal!
Some of the most emotional, romantic, and memorable proposals I’ve photographed have actually happened on rainy days.
The key is simply having a good backup plan and staying flexible.
So if the forecast suddenly changes, don’t panic!
Here’s exactly how I recommend handling it.
What If It Rains During Your Proposal?
First things first, don't stress to early! Florida weather forecasts can change constantly.
I can’t even tell you how many times:
A forecast showed rain all day
Couples panicked
Then the skies completely cleared an hour later
Especially in St. Augustine, beach weather can shift really quickly.
I usually recommend waiting until we’re a little closer to the proposal time before making any final decisions!
Light Rain vs. Heavy Storms
Not all rain days are the same!

Light rain / mist:
Honestly? This can actually be really beautiful in photos.
It creates:
Soft lighting
Moody skies
A romantic atmosphere
Fewer crowds
Sometimes couples end up loving these photos even more because the weather makes the moment feel extra emotional and unique!
Heavy storms / lightning:
This is when I recommend moving to a backup plan for safety and comfort.
And that’s exactly why having options ahead of time helps so much!
Have a Backup Location Ready

This is one of the best things you can do when planning a proposal.
Some great backup options include:
Covered walkways
Historic downtown areas
Museums or courtyards
Covered rooftop spaces
Restaurants with beautiful outdoor covered areas
In St. Augustine specifically, places with arches, covered entryways, and historic architecture can still photograph beautifully even during rain.
Embrace the Weather!
Sometimes the couples who end up loving their proposal experience the most are the ones who stop trying to control every little thing.
Rain can create:
Wind-blown hair
Cozy moments under umbrellas
Dramatic skies
More movement and emotion in photos
And honestly… those moments often feel incredibly real and the photos come out amazing!!
Flexibility Helps So Much
Whenever possible, I always recommend leaving a little flexibility in your schedule.
Sometimes waiting:
20 minutes
1 hour
Or shifting to earlier/later in the day
can completely change the weather situation.
Florida storms often move through quickly!

Some of My Favorite Proposals Have Been Rainy!
There’s something really emotional and beautiful about rainy day proposals.
Maybe it’s because:
Couples lean into the moment more
Everything feels a little more intimate
Or because imperfect weather makes the experience feel even more real
Not every proposal has to happen under a perfect golden sunset to feel unforgettable!
My Biggest Advice
The most important thing is not perfect weather..
It’s the experience itself!
At the end of the day, your partner is going to remember:
How excited you were
How meaningful the moment felt
And the fact that you asked them to spend forever with you
Not whether there was a cloud in the sky.
What Your Proposal Could Feel Like
Rain or shine, your proposal can still feel:
Intentional
Romantic
Emotional
Completely unforgettable
Sometimes the unexpected moments end up becoming the best stories later on.
