If you’re planning a proposal in St. Augustine, first of all, amazing choice!! This city has everything. Beaches, historic streets, gardens, boats, sunrise, sunset, you name it. The tricky part is narrowing down where the best places to propose in St. Augustine, FL are to pop the question!

As a St. Augustine proposal photographer, I help plan and photograph surprise proposals all the time, and these are some of my favorite spots based on lighting, privacy, scenery, and overall experience.
Let’s get into it!
St. Augustine Beach
If you’re dreaming of a barefoot, laid-back proposal, the beach is always a solid option. Wide open space, ocean views, and gorgeous light make this one a favorite!
Why it works
Sunrise is quiet and peaceful
Sunset gives you soft, beautiful light
Lots of space to keep things low-key and private
This is perfect if you want something romantic without feeling over-planned. Bonus points if you’re staying near the beach and can casually suggest a walk!
Rain or shine, proposals still happen here, and you can see how one beach proposal turned into a rainy-day surprise here with Cole's proposal to Emma!
Vilano Beach
Vilano Beach is great if you want beach views but a slightly different vibe than St. Augustine Beach. It tends to be a little less crowded and has beautiful dunes and shoreline!
Why it works
More relaxed and less busy
Amazing sunrise and sunset light
Great for intimate proposals
If privacy is high on your list, this is one I recommend often.

Washington Oaks Gardens State Park
Washington Oaks Gardens State Park is definitely one of the most popular proposal locations for a reason. The gardens are stunning year-round, and the coquina rock shoreline on the beach side is completely unique!
Why it works
Lush greenery and formal gardens
Great for couples who don’t want a sandy proposal
Multiple photo backdrops in one location
This is a great option if you want something a little more polished but still outdoors.
Downtown St. Augustine
Downtown proposals are perfect if you love the historic charm of the city. Cobblestone streets, old buildings, and so many little tucked-away spots!
Why it works
Classic St. Augustine feel and gorgeous views
Easy to make it feel casual and spontaneous
Great options for celebrating after with dinner or drinks
Popular areas include quiet side streets, the Lightner Museum, and Flagler College. Timing matters here, so planning around crowds is key.
If you’re planning to propose during Night of Lights, timing and location matter even more, and I break all of that down here!
Castillo de San Marcos

The Bayfront area near the Castillo is iconic. Water views, historic stone walls, and wide open walkways make this a great spot, especially around sunrise or sunset.
Why it works
Recognizable St. Augustine scenery
Open space with beautiful light
Easy to blend in as just another tourist until the moment happens
This is a favorite for couples visiting from out of town who want something instantly recognizable.
Anastasia State Park
If you love the beach but want a more natural feel, Anastasia State Park is a great option. Fewer buildings, lots of dunes, and a quieter atmosphere.
Why it works
Feels more private
Natural Florida scenery
Great for relaxed, low-pressure proposals
This is especially nice for couples who love the outdoors and want something simple and genuine.
Sailboat Proposals
A proposal on a sailboat is such a fun experience and definitely a little unexpected. Being out on the water gives you privacy and incredible views at the same time.

Why it works
Private and intimate
Incredible sunset views
Built-in experience, not just a location
This is perfect if you want the proposal to feel like an adventure and a celebration all in one.

Proposal Picnics in St. Augustine
If you want something styled but still relaxed, a proposal picnic is such a great option! This can be done on the beach, at a park, or somewhere tucked away.
I also offer proposal picnic setups, which means I take care of the details so you don’t have to. From the layout to the timing, everything is ready when you arrive.
Why it works
Everything is set up for you
Feels thoughtful without being over-the-top
Gives you time to slow down after the proposal and enjoy the moment
Makes those post-proposal photos feel extra intentional
This is one of my favorite ways to help couples create a stress-free proposal experience!

How to Choose the Best Places to Propose in St. Augustine, FL for YOU!
When choosing where to propose, think about:
Sunrise vs sunset
Crowds and privacy
What feels most like you as a couple
Whether you want something casual or more planned
There is no one-size-fits-all location, and that’s honestly the best part.
